Spring Clearing at Forest Hill Station

We had a very productive volunteering day on Saturday 21st March 2026 when the Society welcomed volunteers to help us make Forest Hill Station something we can be proud of.

As well as the usual clear-up of the planters at the station entrance (removing rubbish, cigarette butts, and weeds), we also tackled the waste ground area at the bottom of Platform 1. This area is intended as a storage area for Network Rail but it is not at all an attractive area. The Forest Hill Society have been granted approval to clear it of weeds and to add raised planter beds that will bring greenery and colour and boost biodiversity in this rather neglected corner of the station.

There was a huge amount of work done to remove any existing, unwelcome growth, and we added a couple of pots of Peonies to start to bring life back. So far we’ve cleared about half the area but we will need further sessions to complete the clearance, so if you are keen to take part, get in touch.

The Society will be working with Energy Garden, are partners, to design and build this new area. We are thinking of starting by looking for community input on the design of what to put in this space so we can make it something worth wandering down to see. We will announce a number of ways to get involved in this over the next few weeks.
Thank you so much to the many volunteers, including John, Quetta, Liz, Megan, Annabelle and Bernard, who came by to help, and also to others who saw us working and offered encouragement and moral support.
Will we see you at the next one?
