Over the last few weeks the Forest Hill Society has been looking for a suitable body of water to rename the Gulf of Forest Hill. After careful consideration we have chosen to honour the body of water between Devon and Wales – previously referred to as the Bristol Channel.
The naming takes place on the 100th anniversary of local explorer, Ernest Shackleton's, discovery of Flat Holm Island in the Gulf of Forest Hill on the first day of April 1925, during his historical voyage to discover a shortcut to Elmers End. This was a particularly notable expedition as it took place just three years after his death.
It has never been right for the naming to be given to the second biggest city on this gulf, but we are pleased that the Gulf of Forest Hill will now be used in all maps published and distributed in Forest Hill, and within its Gulf.

To find out a more accurate history of the life of Ernest Shackleton see details of the upcoming local theatre production here.
