On 26 July, a Lewisham Black Book Community Library opened at Sydenham Library. It houses a curated, reference-only collection of 300 – 400 titles by Black British authors. The collection spans picture books, poetry, memoirs, contemporary fiction and historical texts, which reflect the richness and diversity of Black British life.
At the launch there were readings from acclaimed authors Lola Jaye and Salma Ibrahim, family storytelling and a chance for people of all ages to share the joy of reading.

Behind the initiative is the Black British Book Festival, which was launched in 2021 with a mission “to create a space where Black British authors are celebrated, not side lined”. In addition to an annual festival, held in Manchester in March and which was Europe’s largest Black literature event, collaboration takes place at a local level.
The partnership with Sydenham Library is a prime example, and follows the success of a similar arrangement at Croydon Library. Do drop in and experience the wealth of Black literature on offer.
